The Luxury 4D Baby Scan is our premium HD Live bonding scan: same world-class technology as the standard 4D, but with extended scan time, a full keepsake suite and the unhurried atmosphere parents tend to want for what's often a once-in-a-pregnancy moment. It's the package most families pick when they're after the full experience rather than just the result, and when they want take-home memories to last well beyond a couple of A5 prints.
During the scan our experienced and registered sonographer will:
- Bring up detailed facial features and expressions in real-time HD Live 4D
- Capture baby's natural movements: yawning, stretching, hands to face, sometimes a smile
- Confirm position (presentation) and any movement patterns
- Check placenta location where visible
- Listen for an audible heartbeat
The whole party watches on our two 46-inch LED TVs and projector wall from comfortable sofa seating, there's room for Mum plus up to 9 guests. The premium package's print collection runs to 1 A3, 1 A4, 2 A5 and 4 A6 prints, plus every image emailed afterwards, plus a Heartbeat Bear with your baby's actual heartbeat recorded inside. For the same HD Live technology at a friendlier price (with fewer extras), our standard 4D Baby Scan at £78 is the alternative.
When's the best time to book a Luxury 4D Baby Scan?
The optimal 4D window is 24 to 32 weeks, and within that the cinematic sweet spot lands at 26-30 weeks. Here's how the window shapes up:
- 24-26 weeks: Subcutaneous fat is plumping out facial features, and amniotic fluid is plentiful. We recommend booking the Luxury 4D after your 20-week NHS anomaly scan has happened.
- 26-30 weeks (the sweet spot): The week range most Luxury 4D bookings land in. Baby has filled out into "newborn" proportions but isn't yet cramped, and the extended scan time really pays off here. The 28-week milestone guide goes into the science.
- 30-32 weeks: Still photorealistic, though baby is getting bigger and may have descended into the pelvis, which can hide facial views.
- After 32 weeks: Quality begins to drop as both space and fluid reduce. If you're past this and want a check on growth and birth-positioning, the Growth & Presentation Scan is the right tool, different aim entirely.
Image quality always depends on baby's position and a few other factors on the day. We do whatever we sensibly can during the appointment, a side roll, a sip of cold water, a short walk, to coax baby into a better view. If we genuinely can't capture what you booked the scan for, we'll bring you back free of charge for a follow-up scan, Monday to Friday, within two weeks.
Luxury 4D Baby Scan vs 4D Baby Scan: what's the practical difference?
Same scan room, same HD Live technology, same experienced and registered sonographer team. The Luxury 4D simply gives you more: more time with baby, more keepsakes, more ways to remember the moment afterwards. The standard 4D Baby Scan at £78 covers the bonding experience itself; the Luxury 4D Baby Scan at £125 layers a generous keepsake suite on top.
Specifically, what the Luxury 4D Baby Scan adds:
- Extended HD Live scan time: more minutes to watch baby move, with the room not on the clock if baby needs a position change.
- The full print suite: 1 A3 keepsake print, 1 A4, 2 A5 and 4 A6 prints (vs 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints on the standard scan). Enough for framing, posting to grandparents, sliding into the memory book.
- Heartbeat Bear keepsake: a soft toy with baby's actual heartbeat recorded inside. Press the paw, hear the first sound. The keepsake most parents say they end up keeping forever.
If you want the absolute sharpest finish on a particular still frame, our optional 8K AI-enhanced image upgrade (£25 per image, £35 for two) post-processes any 4D shot we capture into a near-photographic keepsake, usually ordered on the day of the scan. For the everyday version of the same scan in a tighter time window without the keepsakes, the 4D Baby Scan at £78 is the alternative.
Worth saying that the NHS doesn't offer 4D ultrasound at all; NHS scans are 2D and clinical by design, focused on screening rather than bonding. A private 4D scan, whether the standard or Luxury 4D Baby Scan package, is the only way to see baby's face before birth in real time. I had a gender blood test and scan done and did not feel that the process was rushed in any way, I got to see my baby projected onto the wall in front of me which is not something I had experienced anywhere else where it’s normally a much smaller screen. I got to take 4 photos away with me but got sent all of them electronically to keep. My gender blood test was on Saturday and I’ve already received my results the following Tuesday afternoon! Amazing service all round, would 100% recommend

It was such a lovely experience and l was so glad to be able to share it with my mum. Gina, my sonographer, was incredible- she made me feel very relaxed and answered any questions I had. I had such a wonderful experience at Numi Scan. From the moment we arrived, my partner, family and I were made to feel so welcome and completely at ease. The clinic itself was calm, professional and beautifully set up. A special thank you to Gina, our sonographer, who was absolutely amazing. She was so kind, patient and knowledgeable, taking the time to explain everything clearly and making the whole experience feel really special. Reception at Unit 13 of The Stottie Shed on Bakers Yard, just off Christon Road in Gosforth: easy ground-floor access from our £1 off-street parking. You and Mum plus up to 9 guests settle in on our sofa seating; our experienced and registered sonographer performs a gentle transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) with warm gel. The whole room watches in HD Live 4D on two 46-inch LED TVs and the projector wall, with extended scan time so you can really enjoy the moment, yawns, stretches, hand-to-face shots, sometimes a smile. You leave with your full print suite (A3, A4, 2× A5, 4× A6), your Heartbeat Bear, every image emailed digitally, and your written wellbeing report.
Hydration is the single biggest lever you have. Drink water steadily across the day or two leading up to your appointment, then top up with 500-750ml roughly 30-45 minutes before the scan. Bladder comfortably full, not painful. Eat as normal; a gently moving baby is easier to image than a sleeping one. Loose, accessible clothing makes the scan easier. No GP referral required, the self-referral guide covers the full booking process.
Quick version: 3D gives you a still photo-style render; 4D adds the dimension of time on top, so instead of paused frames you watch baby move in real time. Both come from layering multiple ultrasound captures into a composite image. Our 4D scans use HD Live technology, which adds realistic skin tones and soft directional lighting, closer to a baby photo than a clinical image. The Luxury 4D delivers both: still 3D-style frames AND moving 4D footage throughout your extended scan time.
It happens. Babies wriggle, sleep, hide. The Luxury 4D Baby Scan's extended scan time gives us more leeway than the standard 4D to coax baby into a better view (a side roll, a sip of cold water, a gentle walk around). If after all of that we still can't capture what you booked the scan for, we'll bring you back free of charge for a follow-up scan, Monday to Friday, within two weeks.
Every scan at our Gosforth clinic is performed by an experienced and registered sonographer working to recognised safety protocols. Our sonographers bring years of obstetric scanning experience to the room. If you'd prefer a male or female sonographer, mention it at booking and we'll match you where possible.
No. And we'd never suggest it. Your NHS dating and anomaly scans are clinical screening for fetal anomalies and you should always attend both. The Luxury 4D adds the bonding experience the NHS isn't designed to provide. Most parents book it after the 20-week NHS anomaly scan has happened.
