How knowing this early actually works
From very early in pregnancy, traces of your baby's DNA spill across the placenta and circulate in your bloodstream. The test looks for Y-chromosome fragments in that mix. If they're present, you're expecting a boy. If they're absent, the result is girl. Reliable from just 7 weeks; long before a sonographer could ever say with confidence.
On the day, the appointment is short. We take one tube of blood from your arm and send the sample to our UK partner lab. Reports come back inside 5–7 working days. You receive the result by secure email, and we ring you so you can choose how (and when) to share it.

Blood test or ultrasound: what fits your timeline
There are two routes to knowing baby's sex, and they suit different circumstances:
- Early Gender Blood Test (from £125): 99% accurate from 7 weeks, lab-reported in 5–7 working days. The earliest answer money can buy.
- Gender Baby Scan (£68): an in-clinic ultrasound from 15 weeks, with the result on the day, plus a wellbeing check and a quick 4D peek thrown in.
Plenty of Newcastle families come to Bakers Yard for the blood test in their first trimester, then return for a 4D HD Live bonding scan a couple of months later. Seven weeks is the earliest reliable point. Before that, the percentage of fetal DNA in the maternal bloodstream is too low for the lab to make a confident call. From 7 weeks onwards the assay performs at 99% accuracy.
It's the same underlying technology as our NIPT, narrowed to one specific question. Your bloodstream contains fragments of placental DNA. The lab tests for the presence or absence of Y-chromosome material. Y present = boy. Y absent = girl. One tube of blood, no needles anywhere near the pregnancy.
Completely. The procedure is a venous blood draw from the mother; identical to a routine GP blood test. There is no procedural risk to baby, unlike older invasive techniques such as CVS or amniocentesis.

Same family of test, very different scope. The standalone Early Gender Blood Test (from £125) answers one question: boy or girl. Our NIPT Test (from £280, three tiers) also reports gender, but layers on chromosomal screening for Trisomy 21 (Down's), Trisomy 18 (Edwards') and Trisomy 13 (Patau); plus sex-chromosome and microdeletion conditions on higher tiers. Choose NIPT if you want chromosomal reassurance alongside sex. Choose the Early Gender Blood Test if you only want to know boy or girl.
