Which week is the right week to book?
The booking window opens at 24 weeks, with two natural peaks: once around 28–32 weeks, and again around 36. Here's how the timeline tends to play out for parents in Newcastle:
- 24–28 weeks: earliest reliable window for proper biometric measurements. A handful of parents book here as an early growth check before NHS midwife appointments take over routine care. The 28-week milestone guide covers what's typical at this stage.
- 30–32 weeks: the sweet spot for growth assessments, baby is large enough for accurate readings but still has space to move into a clear position for the scan.

The appointment is 15 minutes long, with the scan itself taking around 5–10 minutes. You'll find us at Unit 13, The Stottie Shed, Bakers Yard on Christon Road: ground-floor access, off-street parking at £1 for up to three hours, and a few minutes from Gosforth High Street and Regent Centre Metro. Settle into the scan room with up to 9 guests, and your experienced and registered sonographer runs a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) with warm gel. We measure head, abdomen and femur, calculate estimated fetal weight, confirm baby's lie, check placenta and amniotic fluid, and confirm an audible heartbeat. You leave with 4 A6 prints, the full set of digital images and a written report.
Preparation is straightforward: stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment, but you do not need a full bladder (unlike earlier-pregnancy scans). Eat normally before you come in. A bit of gentle movement actually helps with image capture. Loose two-piece clothing makes the tummy easier to access. The presentation check tells you exactly where baby is sitting: head down (cephalic), breech (bottom or feet first), or transverse (sideways). At 36+ weeks that information genuinely matters for birth planning conversations with your midwife or consultant, particularly if baby is breech, which may open up discussions about external cephalic version (ECV) or alternative birth options.
