The growth and presentation scan at Numi Scan Gosforth is a private 2D ultrasound running from 24 to 40 weeks. It's the deepest late-pregnancy assessment we offer, and the one most Newcastle parents pick in the closing weeks, when you want measurements rather than a tape over the bump, and a sonographer who'll talk you through every reading.
What's measured and assessed in the room:
- Biometric measurements: head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length
- Estimated fetal weight calculated from those measurements
- Baby's lie and presentation: head down (cephalic), breech or transverse
- Placenta location and function
- Amniotic fluid levels indexed to gestation
- An audible heartbeat trace through the speakers
You'll watch the whole scan unfold across our two 46-inch LED TVs and the projector wall, with sofa seating for up to 9 guests. This is a reassurance scan, not a diagnostic one. Its job is to give you and your family a clearer picture of how baby is doing in the run-up to birth. The scan is available after your 20-week NHS anomaly scan. Which week is the right week to book?
The booking window opens at 24 weeks, with two natural peaks: once around 28–32 weeks, and again around 36. Here's how the timeline tends to play out for parents in Newcastle:
- 24–28 weeks: earliest reliable window for proper biometric measurements. A handful of parents book here as an early growth check before NHS midwife appointments take over routine care. The 28-week milestone guide covers what's typical at this stage.
- 30–32 weeks: the sweet spot for growth assessments, baby is large enough for accurate readings but still has space to move into a clear position for the scan.
- 34–36 weeks: the most popular booking point by far. You get a strong indicator of birth weight, and any breech or transverse position at 36 weeks is clinically meaningful for birth planning conversations with your midwife. See the 36-week milestone guide for context.
- 37–40 weeks: last-minute reassurance: final position, fluid and growth confirmed in one appointment. Useful if movements have changed or you've got specific late-pregnancy concerns you'd like eyes on.
For a bonding moment in the run-up, the 4D HD Live bonding scan sits naturally at 26–30 weeks. A common pairing for Newcastle families is a 4D scan around 28 weeks and a growth and presentation scan at 36: the full late-pregnancy picture in two visits.
Why book privately for a growth scan?
The NHS doesn't routinely offer growth scans to healthy pregnancies. After the 20-week anomaly scan, NHS care relies on midwife appointments and fundal height measurements with a tape measure, useful, but a long way short of ultrasound precision. NHS growth scans are reserved for pregnancies with specific clinical concerns: small-for-gestational-age suspicion, gestational diabetes, reduced movement, and other recognised risk factors.

I had a gender blood test and scan done and did not feel that the process was rushed in any way, I got to see my baby projected onto the wall in front of me which is not something I had experienced anywhere else where it’s normally a much smaller screen. I got to take 4 photos away with me but got sent all of them electronically to keep. My gender blood test was on Saturday and I’ve already received my results the following Tuesday afternoon! Amazing service all round, would 100% recommend
