A 4D baby scan at Numi Scan Gosforth is a real-time HD Live ultrasound from 24 weeks of pregnancy that lets you see your baby's facial features and movements in stunning lifelike detail. It combines a 2D wellbeing check with extended 4D viewing time on our two 46-inch LED TVs and a projector wall, with up to 9 guests welcome. The scan is £78, takes around 10-15 minutes inside a 20-minute appointment, and you'll leave with 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints, all your images digitally, and a professional wellbeing report. No GP referral is needed and same-day or next-day appointments are usually available.

Book Your 4D Baby ScanWhat's actually different about a 4D baby scan?
A 4D baby scan takes the still 3D rendering you might recognise from older clinic photos and adds the dimension of time, so instead of a paused snapshot, you watch your baby move in real time. Yawning. Stretching. Sucking a thumb. The technology layered on top, HD Live, brings something closer to natural skin tones and soft directional lighting, which is why a good HD Live image looks more like a baby photo than a clinical ultrasound. It's a real change from the grainy black-and-white 2D you'll be familiar with from your NHS dating and anomaly scans.
During your appointment in Gosforth, our experienced and registered sonographer will:
- Show your baby's face and expressions in real-time HD Live 4D
- Confirm position and movement (presentation)
- Check placenta location where visible
- Listen for an audible heartbeat
The whole family watches on two 46-inch LED TVs and our projector wall, there's room for up to 9 guests on comfortable sofa seating, so partners, grandparents, older siblings and best friends can all share the moment. Appointments run for 20 minutes with 10-15 minutes of active scan time. If you'd like a longer scan with the full keepsake package; A3 print, fridge magnet, recordable Heartbeat Bear, the premium Luxury 4D Baby Scan is the upgrade option. When should I book, and is there really a sweet spot?
There is. The optimal 4D window runs 24 to 32 weeks, and within that the very best images come at 26-30 weeks. Here's the breakdown:
- 24-26 weeks: Subcutaneous fat is filling out facial features, and there's still plenty of amniotic fluid around baby for clean imaging. Genuinely good results from this point onward.
- 26-30 weeks (sweet spot): Where the most cinematic 4D footage comes from. Baby looks fully formed and "newborn" but isn't yet cramped against the womb wall. Our 28-week milestone guide walks through why this window works so well.
- 30-32 weeks: Still photorealistic, though baby is bigger now and may have descended into the pelvis, which can hide facial views.
- After 32 weeks: Image quality starts to drop as space and fluid both reduce. If you're past this and want a check on growth, position and birth-readiness, book a Growth & Presentation Scan instead, different aim, different tool.
For a longer, keepsake-rich version of the same scan, extra prints up to A3 and a Heartbeat Bear recorded with baby's actual heartbeat, the Luxury 4D Baby Scan is the premium upgrade. Most parents book their 4D after the 20-week NHS anomaly scan has happened.
Why book a 4D scan if the NHS already provides ultrasound?
Because they're doing different jobs. The NHS doesn't offer 4D ultrasound at all. Its routine scans (the 12-week dating, the 20-week anomaly) are clinical, brief, and built around screening for medical issues. They are absolutely the diagnostic gold standard, and you should still attend both. What they aren't designed to give you is the bonding moment.

I had a gender blood test and scan done and did not feel that the process was rushed in any way, I got to see my baby projected onto the wall in front of me which is not something I had experienced anywhere else where it’s normally a much smaller screen. I got to take 4 photos away with me but got sent all of them electronically to keep. My gender blood test was on Saturday and I’ve already received my results the following Tuesday afternoon! Amazing service all round, would 100% recommend

Quick version: 3D gives you a still photo-style render of baby's face, like a paused frame. 4D adds the dimension of time on top, so instead of a snapshot you watch baby move in real time. Our 4D scans use HD Live technology, which brings realistic skin tones and soft directional lighting, closer to a baby photo than a clinical image. At our Gosforth clinic the 4D Baby Scan is £78. That covers the full HD Live 4D experience, a 2D wellbeing check, your written report, 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints and all images delivered digitally. Across the UK private 4D scans run anywhere from £75 to £200 depending on scan time and inclusions, full national context in our UK private ultrasound cost guide. A 25% surcharge applies once a multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to cover the additional scan time and dual reporting required.
You'll have 20 minutes booked, with around 10-15 minutes of active scanning. Reception is at Unit 13 of The Stottie Shed on Bakers Yard, just off Christon Road in Gosforth, easy ground-floor access from our £1 off-street parking. Once everyone's settled in (up to 10 of you), our experienced and registered sonographer performs a gentle transabdominal scan with warm gel; the whole room watches in HD Live 4D on our two 46-inch LED TVs and projector wall. You leave with 2 A5 + 4 A6 prints, every image emailed to you, and a written wellbeing report.
Hydration is the single biggest lever you have. Drink water steadily in the day or two leading up to your appointment, then top up with 500-750ml roughly 30-45 minutes before the scan. Bladder comfortably full, not painful. Eat as normal, a gently moving baby is easier to image than a sleeping one. Loose, accessible clothing makes the scan easier. We don't run 3D as a separate package because every scan we capture is 4D HD Live by default. You're getting the moving footage and still 3D-style frames at any point during the scan, so a 3D-only booking would just be a more expensive way to get fewer images. The standard 4D Baby Scan is the entry-level booking; the Luxury 4D is the premium upgrade with extras.
It happens, babies wriggle, sleep, hide. Our sonographers are well practised at the small tricks (rolling onto your side, having a sip of cold water, a quick walk around) that often coax baby into a better view. If after all of that we still can't capture what you booked the scan for, we'll bring you back free of charge for a follow-up scan, Monday to Friday, within two weeks.
Every scan at our Gosforth clinic is performed by a fully qualified experienced and registered sonographer, with best-practice protocols. Our sonographers bring years of obstetric scanning experience to the room. If you'd prefer a male or female sonographer, mention it at booking and we'll match you where possible.
Definitely not. NHS dating and anomaly scans are clinical screening; they're the diagnostic gold standard for fetal anomalies and you should always attend both. Up to 9 guests, the most generous in Newcastle, as far as we're aware. Our scan suite has comfortable sofa seating for the whole party, with two 46-inch LED TVs and our projector wall so even the people at the back get a clear high-definition view. Children and grandparents are very welcome. If you're hoping to bring more than 9, drop us a line ahead and we'll see what we can do.
