4D ultrasound takes a 3D scan and adds time, meaning the image moves while you watch. The GE Voluson here in Bakers Yard runs HD Live rendering by default, which lights the surface of baby's skin from a chosen angle so the cheeks and chin look softer and more lifelike than the older waxy 4D look.

24 to 34 weeks is the safe range, but if you're after the cinema-quality cheeks and lips, aim for 26 to 30. Earlier than that and the face still looks a little hollow; later and there's a real chance of a hand wedged in front of the chin. Babies wriggle, sleep, hide their faces. It happens. If your sonographer can't get a clear view of the face during your slot, you're invited back for a free re-scan within two weeks (Monday to Friday). We'll usually try a short walk around Christon Road or a sip of cold water first, that often gets things moving.
