The wellbeing scan in Gosforth is a private 2D ultrasound available from 15 to 40 weeks for reassurance between NHS appointments. Our experienced and registered sonographers check movement, lie, placenta, amniotic fluid and heartbeat in one comprehensive 15-minute appointment. The scan is £65, requires no GP referral, and can usually be booked within a few days. You leave with 4 A6 prints, the full set of digital images and a written wellbeing report. The wellbeing scan at Numi Scan Gosforth is a private 2D ultrasound available from 15 to 40 weeks. It's the appointment most Newcastle parents come back for between their NHS scans: sometimes because the wait between 20 weeks and the next midwife check feels too long, sometimes because movements have felt different, sometimes because they just want a quick look and a real conversation with a sonographer.
What your sonographer covers in the room:
- Baby's movement and tone: how active baby is, breathing patterns where visible
- Lie and presentation: head down, breech, transverse, oblique
- Placenta location: anterior, posterior, low-lying
- Amniotic fluid levels: measured against gestation
- Audible heartbeat trace through the speakers
You'll see everything live across two 46-inch LED TVs and a projector wall, in a non-clinical scan room with sofa seating for up to 9 guests. The appointment runs 15 minutes door to door. If you're earlier than 15 weeks and want reassurance, our Early Pregnancy Viability Scan covers 6 to 9+6 weeks and the Early Pregnancy Reassurance Scan covers 10 to 14 weeks. If you're closer to birth and need head-down position confirmed, the growth and presentation scan is the more thorough late-pregnancy option.
When does it make sense to book one?
Because the scan window runs from 15 weeks all the way to 40, it's the most flexible reassurance scan we offer. Most parents book at one of these stages, sometimes more than once across a pregnancy:
- 15–19 weeks: after the NHS 12-week dating scan, when the gap to the 20-week anomaly scan drags. Plenty of Newcastle parents pair this with a gender determination scan at 15+ weeks since they're already in the room.
- 20–25 weeks: the longest unsupported stretch in NHS care, sitting between the anomaly scan and routine midwife checks. A wellbeing scan here is mostly about confirming movement and growth on track.
- 26–32 weeks: reduced movement, a recent illness, or just wanting eyes on baby. Some parents at this stage opt for the 4D HD Live bonding scan instead (same wellbeing checks, plus the bonding experience), but the wellbeing scan stays the affordable clinical-only option.
- 33–40 weeks: late-pregnancy peace of mind. Closer to birth, when growth and position really matter, the growth and presentation scan is the deeper assessment.
Preparation: if you're under 20 weeks, have around 1 litre of water 45–60 minutes before the appointment; a comfortably full bladder lifts the uterus and sharpens the image. After 20 weeks the bladder isn't really a factor; just stay well hydrated.
Why book privately for reassurance?
The NHS does excellent work, but it's a system built around medical need, not reassurance. Once you're past the 20-week anomaly scan, NHS care relies on midwife appointments and your own monitoring of baby's movements. There is no routine NHS scan between 20 weeks and birth for healthy pregnancies. So if reassurance is what you actually want, you have to look elsewhere.

I had a gender blood test and scan done and did not feel that the process was rushed in any way, I got to see my baby projected onto the wall in front of me which is not something I had experienced anywhere else where it’s normally a much smaller screen. I got to take 4 photos away with me but got sent all of them electronically to keep. My gender blood test was on Saturday and I’ve already received my results the following Tuesday afternoon! Amazing service all round, would 100% recommend

The NHS doesn't routinely scan healthy pregnancies between 20 weeks and birth, so a long stretch of self-monitoring is normal, and for many parents that stretch is what tips them into booking privately. If you've had a recent illness, movements feel different, or you've simply got an appointment-free month and want eyes on baby, £65 for a five-point wellbeing check is the most direct route to reassurance. Our wellbeing and reassurance scan in Gosforth is £65. That covers the 2D scan itself, the five-point check (movement, lie, placenta, fluid, heartbeat), a written wellbeing report, 4 A6 prints, and the full set of digital images. The appointment is 15 minutes long. You'll find us at Unit 13, The Stottie Shed, Bakers Yard on Christon Road, with ground-floor access, off-street parking at £1 for up to three hours, and a few minutes from Gosforth High Street and Regent Centre Metro. Settle into the scan room with up to 9 guests, and your experienced and registered sonographer runs a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) with warm gel. We work through movement, lie, placenta, amniotic fluid and heartbeat, and everything plays out live across two 46-inch LED TVs and the projector wall. You leave with 4 A6 prints, all images digitally, and a written wellbeing report in your hand.
Preparation tracks with how far along you are. Under 20 weeks: have around 1 litre of water 45–60 minutes before the appointment, and don't empty your bladder right before the scan; comfortably full lifts the uterus and sharpens the image. After 20 weeks: a full bladder isn't really needed; just stay well hydrated. Loose two-piece clothing makes the tummy easier to access. No GP referral required. It happens: babies wriggle, sleep and occasionally turn their back to the probe. If we can't get clear enough images for the wellbeing checks, the re-scan is free within two weeks (Mon–Fri). Your comfort and a clear set of pictures matter more to us than rushing through the appointment.
Your sonographer will be one of our experienced and registered team, fully qualified and CQC-regulated. If you have a preference around sonographer gender, mention it at booking and we'll do our best to match the rota.
No, and it isn't designed to. Private scans add reassurance and a bonding element; they don't substitute for your NHS dating and anomaly scans, which remain the diagnostic appointments. Yes, bring up to 9 guests. Two 46-inch LED TVs and the projector wall mean nobody is leaning around the sonographer to see the screen, and there's sofa seating for the whole group. Families travel in to us from Heaton, Jesmond, Fenham, Walker, Byker, Benton, Forest Hall, Wallsend, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth without issue. If you need to bring more than 9, give us a call ahead of time and we'll work it out.
