Can I Get a Private Ultrasound Without a GP Referral?
Short answer: yes. UK private ultrasound runs on self-referral. You book directly with the clinic, no letter, no waiting list. This guide walks through exactly how it works in practice at our Bakers Yard clinic in Gosforth, what to bring on the day, and the handful of situations where a GP referral still pulls its weight.
Quick Answer
Yes, UK private ultrasound is a self-referral service. Numi Scan Gosforth, like every reputable private clinic, runs on a direct-booking model. You book online or by phone, pay a 40% deposit to hold the slot, attend your appointment, and walk out with images and a written report (where applicable). No GP referral letter. No NHS paperwork chain. No waiting list. The experienced and registered sonographer carrying out the scan is the qualified clinician, they take responsibility for the scan, the interpretation, and the onward referral if something needs urgent NHS attention.
How Self-Referral Works
From first click through to walking out with prints in hand, most of our Newcastle parents wrap the whole thing up inside two hours. Five steps.
Pick the package that matches your week
Match the scan to your gestation: early pregnancy reassurance scan from 7 weeks, gender determination scan from 15, 4D HD Live bonding in the 24-34 week window, growth and presentation from 24, NIPT Harmony from 10. The full list lives on our scan packages and pricing page; the pregnancy timeline is handy if you're unsure which milestone you're at.
Book online or call us
Use the online booking system to grab a slot, or pick up the phone and ring 0191 380 0402 if you'd rather speak to someone. Most appointments at our Gosforth clinic are available inside a week, same-day if there's a cancellation.
Secure the slot with a deposit
A 40% deposit holds your appointment. It comes off the balance you pay on the day. There's no GP referral letter to chase, no registration form to complete in advance, no NHS paperwork to wrangle.
Arrive at Bakers Yard, NE3 1XD
Bring photo ID, plus your last menstrual period (LMP) date or NHS dating scan estimate if you have one. We'll greet you, run through a short consent form, and head straight to the scan room.
Walk out with everything
Printed photos in your hand, digital images winging their way to your inbox, and where it applies a written report. The report is yours to show your midwife or GP if it carries clinically useful information, and our your visit page covers what to expect on the day in more detail.
What to Bring on the Day
- ✓ Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
- ✓ Your LMP (last menstrual period) date or NHS dating scan estimate, if you have one to hand
- ✓ Maternity or antenatal notes if you carry them, useful, not essential
- ✓ Loose clothing with an easy-access waistband
- ✓ Mum plus up to 9 guests if you'd like: partners, parents, older children all welcome in our scan room
You don't need a GP letter, an NHS referral form, your antenatal notes or any hospital paperwork. Numi Scan Gosforth operates as a self-referral clinic; the whole point is to make access quick and uncomplicated.
When a GP Referral Still Makes Sense
For routine reassurance, gender, bonding, growth and NIPT scans, self-referral is the right path. There are five situations where the NHS or a GP letter is the better starting point, worth knowing before you book.
Bleeding, severe pain or other miscarriage / ectopic symptoms
Skip the private booking and seek NHS care immediately. Call NHS 111, head to your local Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit (EPAU), or attend A&E. Private scan clinics, ours included, aren't set up for emergency obstetric care, and the EPAU pathway exists precisely for these situations.
Something your midwife has already flagged
If concerns about growth, fluid level or presentation have come up at a routine antenatal appointment, ask your midwife first. Some prefer the NHS to handle the follow-up scan, others are happy to accept a Numi Scan written report from a private growth and presentation scan. Checking saves work being duplicated. The 36-week milestone guide covers the late-pregnancy window in more depth.
Detailed anomaly screening
The NHS 20-week anomaly scan is the diagnostic gold standard for fetal anomaly screening, see our 20-week milestone guide for what it covers. Private reassurance scans aren't designed as a substitute. The good news: no GP referral is needed for the NHS anomaly scan either, since it sits inside your standard antenatal pathway.
Non-pregnancy diagnostic ultrasound
For abdominal, pelvic, gallbladder or musculoskeletal scans, some private radiology providers do ask for a GP letter. Numi Scan Gosforth's specialism is obstetric and women's pregnancy ultrasound; for non-pregnancy diagnostic work we can point you toward a specialist private radiology partner.
Claiming back through private health insurance
Most UK policies don't cover elective baby scans at all. The handful that do almost always require a GP referral letter for any reimbursement to go through. Best practice: check your policy wording first, then ring the insurer to confirm exactly which paperwork they need before you book.
After Your Scan
You leave with everything that matters: printed photos in hand, digital images dropping into your inbox, and a written clinical report where one is appropriate, growth and presentation, anomaly checks, NIPT Harmony results.
If the scan was reassuring, that's it. The appointment closes, the photos are yours, life carries on.
If we picked up something clinically relevant, slowing growth, an awkward presentation, a soft marker, we'll talk you through it in the room on the day, write it clearly into the report, and explain what to do next. The usual answer is to take the report to your midwife or GP at your next NHS appointment so it lands on your maternity records. In genuinely urgent cases (rare, but it happens) we'd arrange an onward referral straight away.
You're not interpreting findings on your own. The experienced and registered sonographer who scanned you is the one explaining the report, and the line is open afterwards if a question comes back to you on the drive home.
