Book Your Dating ScanWhat is a dating scan?
A dating scan is an ultrasound that works out how many weeks pregnant you are. Instead of relying on the date of your last period, which can be thrown off by irregular cycles or late ovulation, your sonographer measures your baby and uses that size to calculate your gestation and an estimated due date.
Our Early Dating Pregnancy Scan runs from 8 to 12 weeks. By 8 weeks your baby is usually big enough to measure clearly, so you get a dependable date early, and you can see the heartbeat on screen at the same time.

When should I have a dating scan?
Book any time from 8 weeks up to 12 weeks. Parents tend to choose this scan when:
- They aren't sure of the date of their last period
- Their cycles are irregular or longer than average
- They conceived soon after stopping contraception or after a recent pregnancy
- They want a due date before telling family, friends or work
- Their NHS dating scan is still weeks away
If you are only 6 or 7 weeks, the Early Pregnancy Viability Scan is the better fit at that stage. From 10 to 14 weeks you can also choose the Early Pregnancy Reassurance Scan, which focuses on growth, movement and wellbeing.
How accurate is a dating scan?
In the first trimester, babies grow at a very similar rate, which is why measuring your baby at this stage is the standard way to date a pregnancy. Ultrasound dating is generally more reliable than counting from your last period, and if the two differ the scan date is usually the one used going forward.
Your NHS team will still carry out their own dating scan, usually between 11 and 14 weeks, and may confirm or adjust your due date then. A private dating scan complements that appointment. It does not include nuchal translucency or combined screening, and it does not replace any NHS scan. If you're interested in screening, the NIPT Test is available from 10 weeks.

Early Dating Pregnancy Scan: NHS vs Private
Your NHS dating scan between 11 and 14 weeks is an important clinical appointment, and we always recommend you attend it. A private Early Dating Pregnancy Scan at Numi Scan Gosforth gives you an estimated due date sooner, from 8 weeks, with no GP referral and no waiting list. It supports your NHS care rather than replacing it.

A dating scan is an ultrasound that measures your baby to work out how many weeks pregnant you are and give you an estimated due date. It is often more reliable than counting from your last period.
Our dating scan starts at 8 weeks, when your baby is usually large enough to measure clearly. At 6 or 7 weeks we recommend the Early Pregnancy Viability Scan (£89), which confirms the pregnancy and looks for the heartbeat.
Measuring your baby in the first trimester is the standard way to date a pregnancy, because babies grow at a very similar rate at this stage. Your NHS team may confirm or adjust the date at their own dating scan.
It is common. Ovulation doesn't always happen on day 14, so the date from your last period can be out by a week or more. If the scan and your dates differ, the scan date is usually the one used, and your NHS team will confirm it at their appointment.
Yes. The scan confirms how many babies there are. A 25% surcharge applies to twin and multiple pregnancies once confirmed, to cover the extra scanning and reporting time.
No, it is too early to see gender on ultrasound. Our Gender Scan is available from 15 weeks, and the Early Gender Blood Test works from 7 weeks.
We usually scan over your tummy (transabdominal). In early pregnancy a transvaginal scan may occasionally be recommended for the clearest view, and only with your agreement.
Yes, it helps. Drink 500 to 750ml of water around 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment and try not to empty your bladder before the scan. Comfortably full is ideal.
Yes. Up to 9 guests are welcome in the scan room, so your partner, family or friends can watch your baby on the big screen with you.
No. You can book directly online or call us on 0191 380 0402.
No. Please keep your NHS dating scan and 20-week anomaly scan. They include screening that this scan does not, such as nuchal translucency and combined screening.
The Early Dating Pregnancy Scan is £75 at our Gosforth clinic, including a sonographer report and printed and/or digital images. A £30 deposit secures your appointment and comes off the total on the day.
If, on scanning, your pregnancy is found to be under 8 weeks, the £89 Early Pregnancy Viability Scan fee applies, as that is the scan suited to that stage. If you're unsure of your dates, call us and we'll help you choose.
