The gender scan at Numi Scan Gosforth is a private 2D ultrasound that confirms whether your baby is a boy or a girl from 15 weeks onwards, alongside a look at baby's movement, position, placenta and heartbeat. It is, frankly, one of the few moments in pregnancy that is purely about excitement rather than reassurance, and after two years of doing this in Gosforth we have got the routine down to a fine art.
Inside your appointment your experienced and registered sonographer will:
- Confirm baby's sex with 99%+ visual accuracy from 15 weeks
- Check baby's lie and presentation on the day
- Watch baby's movement and position
- Note placenta location where it's visible
- Listen to an audible heartbeat on the speakers
Everything plays out on our two 46-inch LED TVs and the projector wall in a non-clinical scan room that comfortably holds up to 9 guests: partner, parents, in-laws, the older siblings, all of them. Want to keep the answer a secret for a party back home in Heaton or Jesmond? We'll write it down and seal it in an envelope. For confetti cannons, a baby photo key ring and the full celebration package, the luxury gender reveal package is the upgrade. For an earlier answer altogether, our DNA gender blood test works from 8 weeks.
When can you have a gender scan?
Visually, on a 2D ultrasound, the earliest the answer becomes properly reliable is 15 weeks of pregnancy. Try sooner and accuracy starts dropping because baby's anatomy simply isn't formed enough to read with confidence. Here's how the timeline tends to play out for parents booking with us:
- Before 15 weeks: we won't offer a visual gender call; it isn't reliable. If you want an answer earlier, the DNA gender blood test reads baby's DNA from a maternal blood sample and is 99% accurate from 8 weeks.
- 15–16 weeks: the earliest reliable visual window. The 16-week milestone guide walks you through what this stage looks like.
- 17–22 weeks: our busiest booking window by a long way, this falls neatly between the NHS dating scan and the 20-week anomaly scan, and baby's anatomy is unmistakable.
- 22 weeks and later: still possible, although baby is bigger and the position can occasionally hide things. Many Newcastle parents at this stage roll the gender confirmation into our 4D HD Live bonding scan from 24 weeks.
Plenty of NHS trusts now operate a no-disclosure policy at the 20-week anomaly scan, the sonographer can see the answer but isn't allowed to tell you. If that's the situation you're heading into, a private gender scan in Gosforth is the reliable workaround. Available before or after your NHS dating scan.

I had a gender blood test and scan done and did not feel that the process was rushed in any way, I got to see my baby projected onto the wall in front of me which is not something I had experienced anywhere else where it’s normally a much smaller screen. I got to take 4 photos away with me but got sent all of them electronically to keep. My gender blood test was on Saturday and I’ve already received my results the following Tuesday afternoon! Amazing service all round, would 100% recommend

It was such a lovely experience and l was so glad to be able to share it with my mum. Gina, my sonographer, was incredible- she made me feel very relaxed and answered any questions I had. I didn’t feel rushed at all, and felt i really was able to bond with my baby. The pictures I received were great quality. I honestly can’t wait to come back for another scan soon!!

This was our third scan at Numi Scan Gosforth and every experience has been exceptional. Our sonographer yesterday was Gina who was just wonderful and so kind and took time to explain everything we could see on the screen. The facility itself is lovely and relaxing. The quality of the scan is very good as are the images you receive afterwards. It really is a luxury service which I think is excellent value for money. I would highly recommend.

I highly recommend Numi Scan for your scans. I felt so welcome from the moment i walked through the door. The man at the front desk (i unfortunately didn’t catch his name) is very friendly. It was such a lovely experience and l was so glad to be able to share it with my mum. Gina, my sonographer, was incredible- she made me feel very relaxed and answered any questions I had. I didn’t feel rushed at all, and felt i really was able to bond with my baby. The pictures I received were great quality. I honestly can’t wait to come back for another scan soon!!

If 15 weeks feels too long to wait, the DNA gender blood test works from 8 weeks via a maternal blood sample and is 99% accurate. Our standard Gender Baby Scan in Gosforth is £68. That covers the 2D gender scan itself, a 99%+ accurate gender call, 4 A6 prints, all images sent digitally, a written scan report, and a complimentary 4D peek when baby's lie allows. A 25% surcharge applies once a multiple pregnancy has been confirmed (typically at or after the NHS 12-week dating scan, or once identified on one of our private scans), to cover the additional scan time and dual reporting required.
The appointment is 15 minutes long, with the scan itself taking around 5–10 minutes. You'll find us at Unit 13, The Stottie Shed, Bakers Yard on Christon Road, easy ground-floor access, off-street parking at £1 for up to three hours, and a few minutes' walk from Gosforth High Street and Regent Centre Metro. Settle into the scan room with up to 9 guests, and your experienced and registered sonographer will run a transabdominal scan (over the tummy, never internal) with warm gel. We check baby's position and heartbeat first, then turn to gender. If you're saving the news for a reveal, we'll seal the answer in an envelope. You'll leave with 4 A6 prints, the full set of images digitally, and a written report.
Have 500–750ml of water around 30–45 minutes beforehand, and don't empty your bladder right before the appointment. A comfortably full bladder lifts the uterus into a clearer position; uncomfortable isn't the goal, just full. Loose two-piece clothing makes the tummy easier to access. The luxury gender reveal package (£95) wraps a celebration around the appointment, adds a complimentary Well-being Scan, and includes a pink-or-blue confetti cannon or balloon, an A4 print, a baby photo key ring, a scan video recording, and a free re-scan baked in. If you want an answer at 12 weeks (or earlier), the DNA gender blood test is 99% accurate from 8 weeks via a maternal blood sample.
It happens. Babies wriggle, sleep, hide their faces and occasionally turn their back to the probe for the entire appointment. If we can't get a confident call we'll spend time encouraging baby to move: drinks, position changes, a short break. With the standard gender scan, if it's still no good there's a £20 charge to come back. With the luxury gender reveal package the re-scan is free within two weeks (Mon–Fri), which is why some Gosforth families prefer that route from the outset.

Yes, bring up to 9 guests. Two 46-inch LED TVs and the projector wall mean nobody is leaning around the sonographer to see the screen, and there's sofa seating for the whole group. We've had families travel in from Heaton, Jesmond, Fenham, Benton, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth without issue; if your party needs more than 9, give us a call and we'll work something out.
